What is an expandable baton? An expandable baton (also called collapsible baton or telescoping baton) typically consists of a cylindrical handle with good grip containing telescopic inner tubes (typically 2 or 3, depending on design) that lock together when expanded. The tubes are made of hardened steel. Expandable batons have a steel ball at the outer end of the baton. The purpose of the fixed tip is to maximize the power of a blow when the baton is used as a striking weapon. Depending on the design, expandable batons can be collapsed either by folding in on a hard surface, or by depressing a latch in the back and manually collapsing the tubes. Advantages of a collapsible baton
The advantages of a collapsible baton over a regular baton are many:-The collapsible tubes make it easier for the police or guard to carry it and sit in the car with it. This is in contrast to non-collapsible batons that cannot be worn on the belt while driving.-The actual release of the baton can in some cases be frightening to an aggressive person (due to both the sight and the sound) with a similar technique used with pump-action shotguns) and can make the attacker surrender without physical violence.-The telescoping baton concentrates the force of a blow more efficiently and to a smaller area than a regular baton. This results in a punch that hits the muscle harder and causes deeper pain, eliminating the need for multiple punches when targeting large muscle groups.
